At the end of the thirty year civil war in Sri Lanka in May 2009 it was estimated that there were 90,000 widows in the north and east of the country. With the deaths on the army side the number of widows would be much higher. During 1988-90 mothers of over 60,000 young people lost their children in the south of the country.
Kunkumam is the red dot married Tamil women traditionally wear.
