Originally from London, Becky Probert got her first camera a Pentax KX, at the age of 8 which began a life long love for photography. She completed a Bachelors degree in Design: Illustration which then lead to a career in Jewellery Design. She then went onto a silversmithing course which inspired her to set up her own jewellery business trading in Greenwich Market.
After several years in the oversaturated handmade jewellery market, Probert became disillusioned and decided to enrol for a Masters of Photography at what was formally known as The John Cass School of Art.
This artists photographic style explores the relationship between Arts and Science; specifically the areas of astrophysics and environmental science. She is interested in how lenses and technology such as space probes affect our perceptions of the universe, acting as both a translator and impediment to how we experience the other bodies in our solar system and beyond. Using both analogue and digital techniques, Probert’s images are created through a combination of astrophotography and exploration of details within commonplace items through a macro lens, using the camera as a conduit to open up doors to the possibilities of what exists in the vastness of space.
She believes that through exploring the science and the wonders of the cosmos on the larger scale we can gain a greater perspective and understanding of our own planet and its fragility, highlighting the true importance of looking after our environment and preserving the Earth for future generations.
Since completing her Masters in 2017, Becky Probert has exhibited in group exhibitions in Cambridge, London, Amsterdam, Festival Pil’ours and Glasgow. In 2019 she took part in the Super / Collider and Sail Britain residency sailing from Ardrossan to Oban along the west coast of Scotland. This was a multi-disciplinary programme examining relationships with our oceans and the importance of them to our ecosystem. This culminated in the group show ‘The Fragile Ocean’ at Lumen Studios in November 2019.
Becky Probert currently resides in Glasgow.
