This intensive workshop is for photographers wanting to gain a fuller understanding of how Photoshop can be used to improve or transform their photographs. It is aimed at beginners and those keen to explore RAW file editing. Putney School of Art is easy to reach by public transport and has a computer suite with 12 computers running Windows software, and a large demonstration screen.
Some of the exercises we will undertake using Photoshop will cover:
- Straightforward RAW processing, particularly for tonal, white balance and preservation of quality issues
- Editing 'local' areas to remove unwanted details such as a telephone wire across the sky or skin blemishes
- Converting of colour photos to black and white and stitching together of panorama shots
Nick will provide images for editing if needed, but it is more fun and productive to bring along your own. The types of images that we will want to use are: images needing cropping for compositional improvements; under- and over-exposed portraits and landscapes; skin blemishes and unwanted elements (signs or wires, etc) in landscapes; images that could be improved by converting to black and white; or a group of overlapping 'panorama' landscapes. If you have images like these (or any others you wish to work with), then bring them along on a USB memory stick.
If you don't plan to use RAW files, we will do basic edits for JPEG files too. If you use a Mac computer there is no problem as the Photoshop layout on a PC is virtually the same. If you are considering purchasing software to follow-up on techniques in this workshop, Photoshop Elements is lower-cost alternative to the current version of Photoshop.
Nick Cobb teaches Digital Photography and Photoshop editing in adult education and schools. His work is mainly studio-based and he is a member of the Constructed Images satellite group of LIP. He will be exhibiting a group of recent work at the summer Whitechapel Open in the Whitechapel Art Gallery.
