Following on from the success of Martin’s workshop last year, he returns to give a practical workshop on Documentary Photography with an emphasis on how to shoot picture stories for print or web-based media.
After a morning introductory session, participants will be encouraged to choose a theme and set out to shoot a body of work during the day. Martin will be on hand to discuss your approach and help with any technical issues that you may encounter.
The afternoon session will comprise of 'one to one' critiques and a variety of 'mini workshops'. The subjects for these will be decided by participants, but may include:
- The difference between shooting single images and picture stories
- Combining still images with sound
- Creating multi-media stories for the internet
- A basic introduction to using your DSLR camera to shoot video
- Legal issues with street photography
Due to the practical nature of the workshop Martin would prefer participants to use digital cameras and to bring in a laptop. This will give him the opportunity to offer instant feedback. If you have them, could you also bring in sound recorders (we will have some for people to borrow).
Martin Shakeshaft is a documentary photographer based in the Peak District. He combines working on editorial projects with teaching digital imaging at De Montfort University. He is currently developing an MA in Visual Journalism, which is due to start in 2012. His editorial clients have included BBC, Channel 4 Television, S4C, The Economist, The Daily Mirror, The Independent, Newsweek Magazine and many others. A selection of his work is housed in the National Museum of Wales’s permanent collection.
