Martin Shakeshaft is a documentary photographer based in the Peak District. He combines working on editorial projects with teaching digital imaging. A particular area of interest is developing opportunities that the internet and new media offer the contemporary photographer.

His editorial clients have included BBC, Channel 4 Television, S4C, The Economist, The Daily Mirror, The Independent, Newsweek Magazine and many others. A selection of his work is housed in the National Museum of Wales’s permanent collection.

Along with Paul Hill and Nick Lockett he runs the recently reformed 'Photographers' Place Workshops'.

The day will start with a talk about a 25 year project that Martin has recently concluded called 'Look Back In Anger.' This explores the long term effects of the closure of the coal industry on the people and landscape of South Wales. This has been widely published both in this country and abroad.

We then move onto practical sessions:
• Optimising exposure and file formats, an introduction to taking images. What the histogram shows us and how it can be used.
• Post production, using Adobe Lightroom to sort, edit and output images.
• Using 'Print on Demand' services to create your own books. From one-offs to short production runs.

The workshop will include taking images and editing them, so bring a digital camera and laptop if you have one. Trial versions of Adobe Lightroom will be available (this can be used for 30 days). Free software for book production will also be provided.
